Durga Puja | National Festivals of India

A symbol of cultural identity for the Bengalis,  is celebrated with much fanfare and gaiety for four days. One of the major festivals of India, it is particularly popular in West Bengal, Assam, Odisha, Tripura, Jharkhand, and Bihar. During Durga Puja, huge clay idols of the ten-armed Goddess Durga and her four children are worshipped in specially made mandaps. People dress up in new clothes and go pandal-hopping with family and friends. The festival culminates with the immersion of the idol of the goddess in water.

 What's Ganesh Chaturthi?  Ganesh Chaturthi commemorates the birthday of Lord Ganesh. Hindus believe it to be the most important day to worship the cherished giant- headed god who's deified for his capability to remove obstacles. On this day, beautiful handwrought icons of the Lord are installed both in homes and in public. Prana Pratishtha is performed to bring the power of the deity into the hero, followed by a 16- step ritual known as" Shodashopachara Puja." During the ritual, colorful immolations including sweets, coconuts, and flowers are made to the hero.   The ritual should be performed at an auspicious time around noon( Madhyahna) when Lord Ganesh is believed to have been born.
